Watching another articulate their thoughts as facts is interesting, and usually something else.

The strategy is transparent. The pretense is transparent. The pretense is rewarded.
And if someone is not cultured enough to pretend elegantly, they get stoned on the townsquarefeed.

Helpful. Effective. Strategy.

Bait. Trick. Gimmick.

The correct label depends on who is doing the labeling.

Does it work?

I’m starting to notice that every time I sit down to criticize someone, some group, some imagined enemy, or something I detest, I am often engaged in, or demonstrating, the very thing I detest.

Design the piece so the surface reading is complete, the deeper options are available, and crossing from one to the other is the reader’s work.

Every maker, in every era, has worked under powers that could set terms they did not consent to.

My relationship to my work does not require the permission of the powers above it. They can set terms for the rooms they own. They cannot set the terms of whether I make, or whether what I make is mine.

The entire history of making is the history of people who were less powerful than the powers above them and made the lasting things anyway.

The sadness of being rated only 23% AI

I make the work. The scanner makes percentages.

I make the work. The report card makes the author.

I make the work. Power makes the author.

I make it. They classify it.

I was disappointed to learn I was only 23% AI.
I documented the disappointment.
They rated the documentation 100% human.
Apparently, grief makes me authentic.

Classification Is a Political Act

A consequential classification makes several claims at once:

  1. We have authority to define the categories.

  2. We have competence to assign you to one.

  3. We have the power to make the assignment consequential.

  4. Our assignment is sufficiently accurate to act upon.

  5. Our category definitions are sufficiently accurate to act upon.

  6. Others may rely on our assignment.

  7. You will carry the consequences unless you successfully challenge it.

Either way, good luck!

AI Detection / Humanity as Defect

The work I spent less time thinking through, with minimal QA/QC, was rated Human, 100%.

The work I spent days and nights conceptualizing, scripting, dreaming, challenging, pressure-testing, feeling for, sensing for, and thinking through was rated AI, 100%.

At first, I thought the system had misjudged my work.

Now, whenever my work is rated human to any degree, I start wondering:

What did I do wrong?

The Detector assigns humanity. The creator adjusts her standards.

the wisest arranging silence

the nicest learning softness
until kindness becomes a costume,

the smartest sharpening light
into a blade that proves it can cut,

the learned stacking names
like stones on the shore
to say: I have crossed an ocean,

the generous opening both hands
while glancing toward the sky
for witnesses,

the mature standing very still
as if stillness itself
could be mistaken for arrival,

the courageous walking into fire
and hoping the smoke remembers them.

Everyone wants to be the one
whose presence leaves a dent,
the one whose name becomes a key,
whose shadow is admitted
into rooms
the body has yet to enter.

Here, the untitled blur first.

The shapeless are passed over
like rooms without signs.

A person may enter
and still go uncounted
until the world knows
what kind of person
it has been asked to see.

So we gather our traits
like flags in a storm:

wise, kind, brilliant, deep,
humble, brave, awakened, rare—

each word a little altar,
each altar asking:
see me,
name me,
place me among the living.

And the world, merciful in its method,
writes us down
by whatever we perform most clearly.

Here, to be someone
is to be seen as one.
